Malyavin, Filipp Andreyevich

1869–1940

Painter and portrait painter. The early years in Malyavin’s development were spent at the icon painting studios of Athos (from 1885). From 1892 he studied at the Academy of Arts under P.P.Chistyakov, V.P.Vereshchagin, K.B.Venig, and from 1894 - I.E.Repin. Took part in the STAE and the World of Art URA exhibitions. An Academician of Painting at the Academy of Arts (1906). The influence of Impressionism and the works of the Scandinavian artist A.Zorn combined to produce Malyavin’s peculiar gushy manner. The artist preferred to work on large paintings. The painting "Laughter" (1899), which he created as his graduation work for the Academy of Arts and which was rejected by the majority of voters, won him the Gold Medal at the World Exhibition in Paris (1900). His most famous portraits and compositions were created in the late 1890s – early 1900s. They include "Portrait of the Artist K.A. Somov" (1895) and "Portrait of I.E.Repin" (1900). The most famous work by Malyavin is his Whirlwind (1906). Later the artist successfully developed the theme he had discovered in various compositions. In 1922 he went to Berlin and later to Paris and then Nice.
