Konchalovsky, Petr Petrovich

1876–1956

Painter. Worked in portrait, landscape and still life genres. His artistic education began in Kharkov and continued in Moscow. From 1897-1898 he studied at the P.Julien Academy in Paris where he discovered the paintings of V.Van Gogh and P.Cezanne. From 1898-1907 he studied at the Academy of Arts in St.Petersburg. A trip to Spain (1910) played an important part in the artists development. A founding member and leader of the Jack of Diamonds group (from 1910). P.P.Konchalovsky, like other masters of this movement, refined the system of Cezanne with lively aspects from urban folklore and primitivism. His energetic brush, like a carpenter or potter’s instrument, uses paint to give a new inspirational substance to painting. The objects seem to be molded from clay or carved in wood. They appear to be more solid and convincing than the real ones. The irony and grotesque present in his paintings give them a lively character ("Portrait of G.B.Yakulov", 1910, "The Dry Paints", 1913). Having spent a lot of time in Italy, in the town of Sienna, the artist created a grand "Family Portrait (Siennese)" (1912), encapsulating his artistic experiments of the early 1910s. The post-revolutionary period in the artist’s creative work is divided into several stages. In the late 1920s he returned to the traditions of classical painting ("Hercules and Omphala", 1928). In the 1930s the artist moved to the Bugry settlement in a desire to get away from the pressures of official Soviet art. There he painted his "Lilacs" and his game birds still life. On the eve of the repression, he painted the picture "Portrait of V.E.Meyerhold" (1937) the portrait of the innovative theatre director was produced shortly before his arrest and subsequent death. During World War II he painted his heroic "Self-Portrait" (1941), where he is wearing a rebellious yellow shirt. In the heat of the dispute with formalism he created a brave work entitled "The Floor Polisher" (1946) where bright contrasted colours challenged the cliche of Socialist Realism.
