A portrait painter. Fyodor Stepanovich Rokotov, the most poetic and enigmatic Russian painter of the 18th century, enjoyed recognition and fame during his lifetime, but was completely forgotten about after his death. It wasn’t until the early 20th century that a new interest emerged in his work. Rokotov was born into a family of serfs belonging to Prince Repnin’s dynasty. He was freed whilst he was still young and in 1760 was admitted to the Academy of Arts on "the verbal order" of its President Count I.I.Shuvalov. He studied "under Lorrain, Lagrain and von Tebasso; learned a lot from Rotari and Tocque" ("Memoirs of Jacob Stelin"). The first major success of the young artist was his ceremonial portrait of Catherine II painted in 1763 to mark her coronation. In 1765 Rokotov was granted membership to the Academy of Arts. In about 1767 Rokotov moved from Petersburg to Moscow. His creative nature was such, that he required an environment in which he could feel independent of official orders. By the early 1770s Rokotov was a fully-fledged master. During this period he created most of his best-known portraits (the portrait of A.P.Struiskaya, 1772, and others). His work is difficult to define in terms of any single style – it has features of rococo and early sentimentalism. In the 1780s Rokotov’s work acquired certain elements of classicism. One of the best portraits painted by him at this time was the portrait of V.E.Novosiltsova, 1780. Little is known of the final years of this artist’s life and work. He died in Moscow and was buried in the Novospassky Monastery. His grave has not been preserved.
