Pologova, Adelaida Germanovna

Born in 1923

Sculptor, author of monumental and easel sculptures, graphic artist. In 1942–1948 she studied at Sverdlovsk’s Art School, in 1948–1952 – Moscow’s Institute of Applied and Decorative Art, 1952–1955 – the V.I.Mukhina High School of Art and Industry in Leningrad. Member of The Artists' Union of the USSR. Member of RAH (since 1997). Adelaida Pologova was one of the artists who fundamentally renovated the language of Soviet art in the late 50s and early 60s. She was one of the first artists to make use of wood’s formal, plastic as well as decorative properties in her sculptures. Some of her works are the epitome of imagery rooted in the traditions of Old-Russian wood sculpture. Because of the laconic and abstract character of her works of that period they were later identified with the Severe Style movement ("Maternity", 1960; "Portrait of Forester Savchenko With Family and Wild duck", 1963). At the turn of the 60s-70s Pologova created numerous monumental works designed mainly for the interiors of public buildings. The characteristic features of her style are architectonics and Constructivism. Pologova is capable of depicting the palpitation of living matter and the brightness of emotional states – from irony to compassion – with the help of various materials, including ceramics, chamotte and limestone. Her art is full of allegory. In the past decades the artist has turned to national spiritual sources ("Serafim of Sarov", 1990) and folk art.
