Miturich, Petr Vasilyevich

Graphic artist, painter and inventor. The Miturich family were originally from Serbia and had been in Russian service from the time of Catherine II. Following family tradition, Pyotr entered the Pskov Military School in 1899 but later left and went to study at the Kiev Arts School 1906-1909. After graduating he was admitted to the Academy of Arts (1909-1915). In 1914, together with the military art studio of Professor N.S.Samokish, he went to the German front. In 1916 he entered the School of Military Engineering where he started working with mechanical equipment using biomechanics. From 1916-1921 Miturich served in the army and fought at the front with the 11th Siberia division. In 1918 Miturich took part in the revolution’s first anniversary celebrations in Petrograd helping to decorate the city. He was also the emissary for the schools of the Northern communes. His work on "spatial graphics" date back to 1918-1921. In the early 1920s he illustrated books by V.Khlebnikov. In 1922 Miturich studied fluctuating motion as an energy saving means for transportation. In 1923 he moved to Moscow joining the Four Arts society (1925-1929). Between 1923-1930 Miturich taught drawing at the Graphic art faculty of the All-Russia Art and Technology Workshops-All-Russia Art and Technology Institute. From 1930-1937 he taught graphic art and architecture at the Institute for the Improvement of Artists’ Qualification in Moscow.
