Ivanov, Aleksandr Andreyevich

1806–1858

Painter and graphic artist. Master of historical painting, landscape artist, genre art painter and portraitist. Son of A.I. Ivanov, an artist and professor at the Academy of Arts. During 1817-1828, he studied at the Academy of Arts. His teachers were A.Ye.Yegorov and V.K.Shebuyev. In 1830 the Society for the Encouragement of Artist financed his trip to Italy. He also visited Austria and Germany. In 1831 he settled in Rome. At the beginning of 1830, A.Ivanov met N.M.Rozhalin, a member of the Society of Lubomudri, who intrigued him with F.W.Schelling’s philosophical study. This later influenced him and became the idea behind Ivanov's painting "Apollo, Hyacinthus and Cyparissus Singing and Playing Music" (1831-1834). In 1836 he was awarded with the title of Academician for his painting "The Appearance of Christ to Mary Magdalene" (The State Russian Museum). In 1834 and 1839 he travelled to the North of Italy and studied Venetian painting, he visited Naples frequently. By 1833 the idea for the painting "The Appearance of Christ to the People (The Appearance of the Messiah)" was already formed. Nevertheless, the artist only started work on this grand painting in 1838 and he continued on the project until 1857. In 1838 A.A.Ivanov got to know N.V.Gogol, who shared the artist's ideas regarding the enlightening duty of the arts and the messianic role of the artist. In 1846 Ivanov set off for Sicily. This period was significant as it led to the creation of a series of landscape studies made on the outskirts of Rome and in Southern Italy (for example, "An Arbour Covered with Vines", 1840s - 1850s). In the 1850s the artist was immersed in his work on a series of drawings and water colours, which was later known as his "Biblical Studies". In 1858 he returned to St Petersburg. The work of A.A.Ivanov stands in the centre of the spiritual search by Russian culture for in the 19th century. The artist defined his beliefs as follows: "A new time requires new art. The primary task of modern art today is combining the technique of Raphael with the ideas of a new civilization". In his painting "Apollo, Hyacinthus and Cyparissus Singing and Playing Music" (1831-1834), which was the first canvas to be painted in Rome, the artist depicts the philosophic and poetic image of antiquity as the Golden age of mankind. Ivanov inspires ideal classical plasticity through the living romantic experience. Ivanov’s production canvas is "The Appearance of Christ to the People (The Appearance of the Messiah)" (1837-1858), where the evangelic plot is interpreted as the moment of spiritual upheaval and the moral resurrection of mankind. In his landscape studies for the painting the artist combines the philosophic intensity of world interpretation with the subtle elaboration of the light and air environment. Ivanov’s last project - "Biblical Studies" - is a deeply individual interpretation of the Holy Scriptures as the unity of religion, mythology and history.
