Shchedrin, Silvestr Feodosiyevich

17911830

Artist. Landscape painter. Son of the sculptor F.F.Shchedrin, nephew of the landscape painter S.F.Shchedrin. From 1800 until 1812 he studied at the Academy of Arts in the landscape class. On graduating from the Academy he received a large gold medal and a pension (scholarship) to study in Italy. Nevertheless, because of the war with Napoleon he was only able to go in 1818. Initially he lived in Rome and worked primarily through commissions from travelling Russian aristocracy. He painted several variations of the painting "New Rome. The Castle of Holy Angel" (1823-1825). In 1825 he moved to Naples where he lived until his death. The artist gained fame and recognition for his landscapes of Naples and its outskirts. Sylvester Shchedrin creates an image of romantic Italy as Heaven on Earth, a country with rich nature and a thriving life. The world of Shchedrin's art contains neither dramas, nor conflicts. They are full of harmony, sun and light. The artist's favorite motifs are verandas covered with vines, cozy little bays and caves, where man can find a divine inner peace in his meeting with nature. For the first time in Russian art, Shchedrin in his landscapes addressed the problem of plein air, discovering new methods for artists of successive generations. In his later work the artist gave credit to the fashion, of that time, of the complicated effect of evening light.
