Though he was a consistent Academic artist, Shebuev was not constrained to stay within the boundaries of pure Classicism. He was also interested in other traditions. For example, the present work is more reminiscent of a genre scene.
The artist dresses himself up in a 17th century outfit. On his face, he wears an enigmatic half-smile that was more typical of heroes of Romantic canvases.
The colour range is characteristic of Shebuev. It is built on a combination of local flowers selected with great taste. The painting is unfinished. Only the self portrait is completed, while the remaining figures remained in the form of preliminary sketches.
