The study can be called Polenov's true masterpiece, showcasing a variety of plain-air painting possibilities realized by him. The work is striking in the sharpness of the painter's new reading of a world-famous monument. The experience gained in working in the open air under the bright southern sun made the artist observe closely the changing of colour in response to lighting. He chose a side angle for the view of the portico, thus rendering the composition elegant, light and dynamic.
The cathedral, seen from below, is outlined against the bright blue sky, making the marble's ochreous hue more pronounced. The footpath, weaving its way through grass and stones, acquires pink tones. Polenov's plainairism experience subsequently influenced the evolution of the signature manner of impressionist artists K.A.Korovin and V.A.Serov.
