The second half of the 1950s was a time of “thaw” which for V.N.Gavrilov became a period when he shaped his own individual painterly style. “…Changes in the public life of the country occurred before our eyes,” the artist wrote, commenting that “taking delight in life and beauty – this is a feeling as eternal as life itself.” The picture A Fresh Day was painted during one of the artist’s stays at the “Academy Dacha” – a place not far from the city of Vyshni Volochek in Tver Oblast, where artists worked in plein air. Gavrilov achieves amazing strength via his colour solution in conveying the “flashing” sunlight reflections and unified vibrations of the air, water and space. The immediacy of an etude impression is turned into a picture image wherein there is complete joining of man and the world of nature.
