Timber Floaters

oil on canvas

The artist presents a new treatment of the personality of a worker. Instead of individuality of personages we see typology. The images of young men and of a girl are romanticized though rather direct and unambiguous. In the confident poses of the personages we can read bravery and reliability. They are silent and busy with their difficult matter, but their gazes are turned in a summoning, placard-like manner directly at the spectator. The staccato rhythm of the timbers and the strong currents of water emphasize the enthusiasm and the heroic decisiveness of the personages. Psychological treatment gives way to expressiveness of spare gestures and an emotional colour characterization of the milieu. The colouristic element tries to break out of the firm constructive framework of the composition which is developed as if in a single plane. Through the plastic expressiveness of the canvas the emotional essence of the depicted phenomenon is conveyed. Hence the local paint application, the absence of chiaroscuro and the compositional directness. By means of the monumental structure of the picture and powerful elemental painterly quality the artist has emphasized the bravery of people and the importance of everyday matters.
