Our Lady of Liubiatovo

Mid-15th century
Tempera on wood
109 x 77

The depiction of Our Lady of Liubiatovo relates to the Tender Affection type. Pskov residents considered the icon of Our Lady of Liubiatovo to be miracle-working. It may be that the icon was revered as early as the 15th century or that it was a copy of a still more ancient worshiped image. According to tradition, in 1570 Tsar Ivan the Terrible went to Pskov to execute its citizens. He spent the night in the monastery of St Nikolai in Liybiatovo, on the outskirts of Pskov. During the morning prayers, while he gazed on the icon of the «Our Lady of Mercy», Ivan the Terrible «showed mercy of heart», and «told his troops: dull your swords on stones and stop the slaughter».
