The name is connected with the origin of the icon from the Tolgsk Monastery in Yaroslavl situated on the banks of the Tolga river.
The icon pertains to the «throne» depiction of Our Lady of the «Tender affection» type, which is rare in Russian iconography and other originals from the period have not survived.
There are also «poyasnye» icons bearing the same name. The earliest of these is kept in Yaroslavl and is considered to be miracle-working. This is the one which legend names with respect to the «miraculous apparition» in 1314 to Bishop Prokhor on the site where the Tolgsk Monastery was later founded.
Numerous copies have been made of the miracle-working poyasnaya «Our Lady of Tolgsk».
