This Deisus is one of the most ancient icons. Most researchers see in it features characteristic of painting of medieval Russia of Vladimir-Suzdal from the first third of the 13th century.
The icon may have been moved from Vladimir to Moscow in 1518 under Ivan the Terrible, together with the icon of the “Saviour Emmanuel with the Archangels” and other revered icons.
Deisus is the Greek word for prayer, supplication. In the composition we see an expression of the idea of the intercession of saints for people before Christ. In the centre is the Saviour; on the sides, turned to Him, we see Our Lady and John the Baptist.
