The image of the Saviour seated on a throne was widespread in Old Russian art.
The Saviour is presented on a bright red vermillion background which is typical of Novgorod monuments from the 13th – 15th centuries. He blesses us with his right hand and with his left he holds the open Gospel with a text from John (VIII, 12).
The depiction of the Saviour is framed by the figures of saints who are especially revered in the region of Novgorod. They are in the fields of the icon. In the centre of the upper field is the Prepared Throne, alongside of which are the semi-figures of archangels Michael and Gabriel; on the side fields there are the great martyrs Georgy and Dmitry Solunsky, Roman Pope Clement and the holy saint Ipaty Gangrsky, the prophet Ilya and holy saint Nikolai; on the lower field there are shoulder-length depictions of the martyrs Flor and Lavr, and between them is the holy saint Vlasy Sevastiisky.
