Caius Cilnius Maecenas (between 74 and 64 BC – 8 BC) was a statesman in Ancient Rome and a member of the circle around Emperor Augustus. He exerted considerable influence on the literary and artistic life of Rome. He was a friend of the most important poets of his time. His name became a synonym for protector of the arts and sciences. The artist has painstakingly reconstructed the interior of a wealthy Roman house and the everyday details using the latest achievements of archeology and history.
