The artist has depicted his wife, E.T. Barkova. The portrait was influenced by French Cubism, which received here its own lyrical interpretation. The model loses her physical presence and seems to be a volume in colour which literally dissolves amidst coloured planes.
Osmerkin believed that “in portrait art the most important thing is to capture psychological and plastic depth.” The point of departure was always the “image of a man in his typical features; that is the final criterion in the end.” For this reason the artist thought it was important to find the most precise way of conveying the essence of the person depicted, his inner world and to know how to express his own relation to the model through painting, form, colour and composition.
