Chagal became well known after the exhibition The Year of 1915 in Moscow, where he showed 25 works from his Vitebsk Series. This was a fateful year for the artist. In July, Bella Rosenfeld became Marc Chagal’s wife. The young married couple left for the Rosenfeld dacha in the village of Zaolshie, not far from his native Vitebsk. At this happy time, he drew the painting Window in the Dacha. The artist depicted himself and Bella standing before a window, on the other side of which there is a view of the edge of a birch tree forest. The curtain has been drawn to one side as if inviting the viewer to admire the landscape. The faces of Chagal and Bella and the still life at the window are so arranged as if they seemingly frame the landscape. But it is precisely the two profiles that invite our regard at first; they are placed between the space of a world that opens up beyond the window and the space of the viewer. The artist has been able to create a special space of two people in love where harmony and peace reigns.
