The painting was done in the year when construction of the Stock Exchange was completed and the famous architectural ensemble of the central part of St Petersburg took shape.
The artist strived to present the capital of the Russian Empire as a model city in which nature and the creation of human endeavor came together.
The logical accent in the composition is on the Stock Exchange building. From the
Exchange to the Neva there is an architecturally crafted descent. To the left of the Stock Exchange is the rostral column. Behind the Stock Exchange is the building of the Twelve Colleges.
The opposite shore of the Neva has palaces and administrative buildings: in the distance we see the old building of the Senate (formerly the house of A.P. Bestuzhev-Riumin), the Admiralty with the cupolas of Church of Isaac of Dalmatia rising above it. In the left part of the picture we see the Winter Palace. Along the wide mirror-like surface of the Neva, which was called the main boulevard of Petersburg, a multitude of small and large boats are gliding by.
