Tatyana Alekseevna Trubetskaya was the daughter of the Chief Procurator of the Synod Prince A.S. Kozlovsky and sister of the writer F.A. Kozlovsky who was closely associated with the leading literary figures of the second half of the 18th century: Fonvizin, Kheraskov, Novikov and Maikov.
At the basis of the imagery for the sitter of the portrait the artist has used the unchanging, static features of her nature. For an artist of the mid-18th century there was special attraction in the expressive, decorative potential of the painting itself.
The colour range of the work is constructed on simple but harmonious and deep colours: local red and green. In combination with these we see an abundance of large, bright decorations – ribbons, ruches, roses – which create an image of a woman who is rather simple, unpretentious and possibly somewhat limited in her spiritual needs.
