The Stone Bridge in Gatchina on Conetable Square

The landscape is part of a series of large decorative panels done at the behest of Emperor Paul I to adorn the interiors of the Mikhailovsky (Engineers’) Castle in St Petersburg. The clear and peaceful landscape, the balanced composition, the warm, brownish-golden colours and the figures of people which enliven the painting were intended to direct the viewer to quiet contemplation of a peaceful area of nature. Everything in the landscape gives off quiet and poetry: the thick foliage of the trees, the mirror-like smooth surface of the pond to the left of the painting. The park architecture appears harmonious and appropriate amidst this natural landscape.
