The State Tretyakov Gallery - is one of the most famous museums in the world. Its collection highlights Russian art with exclusive completeness from the ancient time (11-12th century) to the present day. The Gallery was founded in 1856 by the Moscow merchant and entrepreneur Pavel Tretyakov. Since that time it has become one of the largest Russian museums, encompassing approximately 150,000 paintings, sculptures and graphic works.

The collection is on permanent display at the Gallery's two main buildings in the historical part of Moscow downtown: in Lavrushinsky Lane (early Russian art, Russian art of the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries) and on Krymsky Val (20th century art, modern and contemporary art). The complex of museum buildings in Lavrushinsky Lane is one of Moscow's most beautiful architectural ensembles. The All-Russian Museum Corporation of the State Tretyakov Gallery also includes five small memorial museums.
