As in other watercolour landscapes by Bryullov, the view is devoid of people. It keeps an epic verve despite its relatively small size. The landscape is executed in a reddish-brown colour range, which is characteristic of the painter’s later works. The artist’s temperament is conveyed through expressive and dynamic brush strokes. Bryullov uses the Romantics’ favourite effect of double lighting by contrasting a sunset sky turning pink with storm clouds.
