The exhibition will introduce the work of three masters of different generations. Pavel Fedorovich Nikonov (born 1930) is the central figure of the project; he is one of the main artists of the Thaw period and belongs to a galaxy of masters, whose names in the 1960s were associated with the renewal of the pictorial language that laid the foundation for the “severe style”. For more than 60 years, Pavel Nikonov has remained an active participant in the contemporary art process.
Mikhail Fedorovich Nikonov (1928–2010) is Pavel Nikonov’s older brother and polar opposite in art. Mikhail Nikonov was one of the leaders of the Group of Nine, or The Nine; he tried to reconsider the traditional artistic foundations in his work. Sharp, grotesque imagery distinguishes the work of Mikhail Nikonov. His manner of painting matches the imagery, being open and expressive, built on color contrasts.
The third exhibitor, Victoria Nikonova (1968–2008), Pavel Nikonov’s daughter, belonged to the next generation of masters. Turning to simple familiar objects (a series with windows, and fragments of the interior), the artist revealed in them a depth of emotional experience of the world that is accessible to art. In these works, Nikonova appears as a subtle colorist and sensitive observer.
The exhibition will feature 130 paintings and 30 graphic works.
