To celebrate the coming 20th anniversary of the Macao Museum of Art under the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government, Masterpieces of Russian Art from the State Tretyakov Gallery will be held from 19th January to 22nd April 2019, featuring a total of 70 oil paintings and sculptures from the end of the 18th century to mid-20th century from the Tretyakov collection.
Boasting more than 180,000 works, the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow is an art museum that holds the largest collections of Russian fine art in the world. The gallery was founded in 1856 by renowned art collector and merchant Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov (1832 – 1898). In 1892, he donated his full collection to the Russian state, including masterpieces by celebrated artists of The Wanderers in the 19th century. Therefore the gallery was named after its founder and it has since become one of the world’s most famous and valued national museums.
The exhibition presents major artistic styles and trends in Russia art by three periods: 1) Classicism and Romanticism of the late 18th and the first half of the 19th century; 2) the various artistic schools emerging during the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, such as The Wanderers, Impressionism, Modernism, Avant-garde, etc.; 3) the artistic trend influenced by Socialist Realism in the Soviet era in the mid-20th century.
The exhibition begins with the cityscapes of St. Petersburg and Moscow, following with works depicting folk culture, natural landscapes, portraits of people from all walks of society, and still lifes, all of which reflect, from different perspectives, the unique features of Russian art as well as a comprehensive panorama of the living habits and traits of the Russian people in the referred periods. All works are from famous painters and sculptors including I.N. Kramskoi, I.Y. Repin, I.I. Shishkin, V.Y. Makovsky, among others. In addition, the event will showcase portraits of the founder of the gallery, Pavel Tretyakov, and the great composer Tchaikovsky.
Today, the State Tretyakov Gallery is a magnet for almost all visitors to Moscow. The Macao Museum of Art presents this exhibition of selected fine works, aiming for a new visual experience where the public could appreciate first hand originals by Russian arts masters for close exchanges. In fact, this exhibition marks the very first cooperation between the Macao Museum of Art and a Russian museum, being also the first major display of Russian fine art in Macao, and therefore it is a much-anticipated event of great significance.
