The treasures of Byzantine art from the Byzantine and Christian Museum of Athens and Benaki Museum, as well as from the private collection of Emilios Velimesis and Christos Margaritis, are received in the Tretyakov Gallery for the first time.

Eighteen works of art belonging to Byzantine and Post-Byzantine period are exhibited, yet each one of them is so individual and complex that deserves to be called a masterpiece.

This exhibition crowns a number of events held in both Russia and Greece as part of the Cross-cultural year between the countries. Byzantine Masterpieces exhibition in the State Tretyakov Gallery is intentionally located close to the exhibition of Ancient Russian art. Such closeness allows to compare the processes, which took place in both cultures and to understand the specific features of each in a deeper way.
